Global Chip Sales Grow 8.9%

With strong economies worldwide, consumers snapped up electronics goods in 2006, pushing global chip sales up 8.9%.

Total sales of semiconductors in 2006 came in at a record $247.7 billion, vs. $227.5 billion in 2005, according to trade group the Semiconductor Industry Association. The results were roughly $1 billion shy of the group's revised forecast made in November.

In December, chip sales grew 9% year over year, but declined 3.6% sequentially to $21.7 billion.

The growth in 2006 was largely driven by consumer-electronics products like cell phones, MP3 players and HDTV sets, according to SIA President George Scalise.

Lower costs and improved functionality offered by semiconductor technology has allowed the new crop of gadgets to proliferate, said Scalise. And favorable economic conditions in the major world markets has resulted in strong consumer confidence and spending, he said.

JVC Gets Ready to Launch 120Hz HDTV Sets

I talked a bit about a demo I saw at CES from Olevia that showed the difference in picture quality you get from a LCD TV with a 120Hz refresh rate compared to a set with the standard 60Hz rate. The visual difference was quite impressive with the 120Hz set looking much clearer and more life like.

JVC is poised to beat Olevia to market with sets based on the 120Hz tech and have announced three new TVs that will utilize the higher refresh rate allowing a new image on screen every 8.3ms, which is twice as fast as standard sets. The improved refresh rate is achieved via interpolation. The 32 LT-32L95, 37 LT-37LC95 and 42 LT42LC95 all share 120Hz refresh, 1366 x 768 resolution, 500 cd/m2 brightness and built in digital tuners. .

Review: Autumnwave OnAir GT USB HDTV Tuner

Don't let its size fool you. Just plugging this sleek, miniscule tuner into your laptop's USB port can transform your humdrum mobile rig into an HDTV-pilfering powerhouse. The GT works by pulling HDTV signals out of the air and playing them back in their full resolution glory. The cost of free isn't cheap though—the GT receives crystal clear HDTV signal in large cities, but gets sketchy out in the boondocks. A flimsy remote and clunky software are also disappointing given the GT's otherwise superstar performance. Although it wouldn't replace a traditional HDTV setup at home, this inexpensive tuner is an awesome addition to your travel arsenal. – Terrence Russell

WIRED Lightweight. USB power makes unit truly mobile. Receives old-school analog and unencrypted cable signals. Offers both timeshifting and live pause.
