| Sound Advice: DLP TV takes the top prize for picture, price
Q: My first question is, how do DLP [digital light processing] TVs rate against LCD and plasma? My second question regards the lock cable has on digital TV. When the change is implemented and analog is gone, will you be able to receive digital channels directly on your digital TV without any kind of a box or equipment from your cable company? CAROL R., Hamilton, N.J. A: I prefer DLP to either LCD or plasma, finding that DLP produces a better picture at a lower price, especially at large-screen sizes. The disadvantage: DLPs are deeper than flat-panel LCD or plasma TVs, which can be mounted on the wall. DLPs that can be wall-mounted are on the horizon, though. Cable (and satellite) hardly have a lock on digital TV -- far from it! You can receive network programming for free on any HDTV set with a digital tuner, or with any other TV when used in conjunction with a digital tuner.
Corning to Expand Japan LCD Plant
CORNING, N.Y., Feb. 8, 2007 -- Corning Inc. announced today it will invest $160 million to expand its capacity to manufacture large-size glass substrates for active-matrix LCDs at its Shizuoka, Japan, facility. The expenditure will be incurred over the next year and a half, it said, and glass substrate production is expected to begin by mid-2008. Capacity figures were undisclosed. James P. Clappin, president of Corning Display Technologies, said in a statement, "We have built our leadership position by combining our technology expertise with a dedication to providing a reliable source of superior products. The increased capacity will create additional support for our customers in Japan and Taiwan, who are experiencing growing demand as LCD TV strengthens its hold on the 40-inch and larger market." In 2006, Corning signed a long-term supply agreement making Corning the majority glass substrate supplier for Sharp Corp.'s Generation (Gen) 8 fab in Mie Prefecture that focuses on LCD TVs 40 inches and larger.

PDP TV Shipments Surge, Outperform CRT TVs in Year-End Sales
Japan's domestic shipments of consumer electronics grew 4.0% year-on-year (YoY) to ¥365.3 billion in December 2006, according to statistics announced by Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA). Although November 2006 shipments came under last year's value, year-end sales performance was favorable. Shipments of visual equipment rose 8.2% YoY to ¥274.7 billion. Thin-panel TV shipments grew solidly. LCD TV shipments increased 37.8% YoY to 920,000 units, while PDP TV shipments soared 53.8% YoY to 137,000 units. PDP TVs prevailed against CRT TVs for the first time by winning a larger ratio in overall TV shipments. Meanwhile, shipments of audio equipment dropped 23.4% YoY to ¥30 billion. JEITA considers this is a reaction to the rapid growth of portable music players with a built-in HDD or flash memory in the preceding year.
